The residential solar systems having fewer solar panels produce less electricity and consume less space but still lead to huge savings. Hence the size difference does not make any sense as a residential property will not have similar energy requirements as the big commercial ones.

Installation

Both residential and commercial solar systems are installed in the same way using a bolted racking system that is globally recognized as safe and efficient. Generally, a commercial solar system is easier to install as they usually have flat roofs, and panels can be fixed using a ballast mounting system. With residential systems, most installations will be on a pitched roof, hence will require a penetrating racking to mount the system and bolt it on the roof. On the other hand, commercial solar systems take around a month to complete the installation, while the residential system takes two or three days.

Color/Shade

Solar panels used for commercial purposes are generally white in color, and residential systems are available in black or white color. Residential customers opt for black colored panels with black backing, while commercial customers go for black colored panels with white backing.

Cost

Commercial solar systems have higher costs and lower cost per watt. Another key difference between residential and commercial solar systems is the cost component. On a panel-by-panel basis, commercial systems will be costlier as they are larger and have more storage space than residential. It is also crucial to know that the solar panels are not purchased individually, and therefore the cost of a solar system is calculated based on its power calculation. As the solar systems are sold per kilowatt-hour, they cost the same for residential and commercial if given equal kWh and production.

Panel placement

There are several options for commercial properties to install solar systems compared to residential properties. Commercial systems can be installed on their rooftops and also can expand creatively, taking advantage of solar-paneled parking lots or open ground installation on surrounding land. However, the residential solar systems don’t have more options like commercial ones as they have limited home size and neighborhood restrictions.
